RE: Reasons why developing a safe and secure Motorcycle & Scooter Parking Plan will benefit all of NYC.

Upon request, we at NYC Motorcycle Advocacy Group, have outlined the benefits of developing a safe and secure motorcycle and scooter parking plan that will improve the quality of life for all New Yorkers.

We are happy to work with all NYC Government agencies to develop such a plan.

Many cities such as San Francisco, San Diego, London, Toronto, Columbus Ohio, Rome, Tokyo, Taipei, have embraced motorcycles and scooters. These cities have provided dedicated parking for 2 and 3 wheeled vehicles.

Encouraging people to use motorcycles and scooters will:

1-Ease Traffic Congestion.
----Reduce idling motors.
----Lessen vehicle breakdowns(wear from bumper to bumper traffic).
----Less wear and tear on the roads, bridges, tunnels.
-------NYC will save money with less road repairs.
--Increase Highway Traffic Flow.
----Reduce driver/commuter stress.
----Reduce inner city congestion.
----Reduce commute time.
******More productive work force.
2-INCREASE the "GO GREEN" Effect(ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY VEHICLES)!!
----Reduce pollution.
----Lower Carbon footprint.
----Burn less fossil fuels(40-125 Mile per Gallon).
----Decrease our dependency on foriegn and domestic oil.
----Electric Motorcycles are also widely used in cities.
3-Lower vehicle operating/maintainance costs for owners.
----Owners save money, can spend it elsewhere in NYC.
----Shoppers will have more efficient access to stores.
4-Encourage visitors to NYC.
----Increase revenue for public and private business due to
using a motorcycle or scooter to shop, dine, or sightsee.
5-Pedestrian Safety.
----Smaller vehicles are safer to pedestrians and property.
6-Parking more motorcycles and scooters in one spot.
----7 to 8 motorcycles and scooters can fit in one 22' metered parking spot.
7-Help small vehicle businesses.
----There are many motorcycle and scooter dealerships in NYC.
-------Combined, they sell thousands of 2 wheeled vehicles a year.
-------IE: Vespa Soho over 2000 scooters sold in 7 years.
-------Also, Ducati NY, Average sales of 350 motorcycles per year.
----They employ many people and pay taxes.
----There are also mechanic shops, motorcycle clothing stores, parts distributors and other businesses that serve the two and three wheeled community.
8-Increase the charity work/events that motorcyclist organize.
----These events include Toys For Tots, turkey drives, food drives, blood drives, MIA/POW awareness, gather supplies for Katrina and Haiti survivours, raise money for cancer research and numerous childhood illnesses, support for 911 Firefighters, victims families, and workers; gather supplies for our troops,

If Americans were to switch just 10% of their total mileage to motorcycles scooters, they would consume 14 - 18 million gallons less fuel per day and carbon dioxide emissions could be reduced by 324 million pounds per day as well. (Source ICR survey, May 2006)

On a personal level, they could also reduce fuel consumption by approximately 58%, carbon dioxide emissions by 80%, and significantly reduce traffic congestion.
